My Love of Music

My musical journey began in the most humble of ways — playing a small, plastic organ by ear as a very young child. It wasn’t anything grand; in fact, the organ had been purchased by my mother with Green Stamps — a detail that likely dates me more than I care to admit!

Before long, my father bought us a piano, and from the moment it arrived, I was captivated. Music quickly became my passion. I took a few early piano lessons and later participated in the school band throughout junior and senior high school, which made up the bulk of my formal musical training.

After earning a degree in communication in college, I stepped into ministry, serving as music director for a small Baptist church. Over the next 25 years, I led worship, directed choirs, played piano, and sang. It was an invaluable season of hands-on experience that helped shape both my musicianship and my ability to lead others in worship.

Today, I remain active musically—singing in a local choir and playing piano. I also share original worship songs and orchestral compositions online. Every so often, I find myself in situations that remind me how far this journey has taken me — like the recently when I quietly slipped in the side door of a church filled with over 400 people and played piano for an event. It’s a far cry from the introverted child I once was, who could barely imagine performing in front of a crowd. But God truly does make all things possible.

Below are a few samples of my musical offerings, some of them original compositions. Several of these were created for scoring competitions such as the Spitfire Audio Film Scoring Competition and the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards.

I composed an alternate score for the short feature, “The Ocean Maker,” for an international music competition. Click the link and you can view the short and hear my score. The score was recorded in my home studio using sampled orchestral instruments and piano.

This is my original score for a scene from the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” This was composed for Spitfire Audio’s scoring competition.

“Jonas and the Sea”

Below is a link to a snippet from the animated short film “Jonas and the Sea” from HALAL Studios in Amsterdam. The film was directed and animated by Marlies van der Wel. I composed a musical score for the short last summer and produced the music on this clip for an international film music awards competition.

Sounds of Grace

This is a new melody and arrangement I wrote for “Amazing Grace.” It was written for the Christmas season. Click the link below for the video.
